Transition & Pathways

At St Matthews Catholic School we offer support and guidance to our students at different points of their transition in our K-12 context that compliment our learning and teaching programs.

In the early stages, our comprehensive Kindergarten orientation program including ‘Bright Beginnings’ welcomes students on their lifelong learning journey in a supportive and nurturing environment. The program allows our youngest students to familiarise themselves with the school environment and routines.

For Year 6 students moving into secondary school our programs acknowledge the uniqueness of the individual and are at the heart of Catholic Education in the commitment to develop the whole person. Focusing on skills needed for the secondary schooling context, students are supported in their transition in their academic, social, emotional and spiritual capacities allowing them to fully accept all learning and co-curricular opportunities provided. Students engage in two orientation days designed to familiarise themselves with typical secondary subjects; routines whilst making connections with staff, other students and our amazing Secondary campus. On the first days of secondary school Year 7 students engage in a comprehensive and purposeful transition program designed to facilitate a smooth transition into their new routines and skills required for learning in a secondary context. Sessions such as “Lets Get Organised”; “Chromebook Boot Camp”; “Our Chapel, Our Faith”; and “Orientation Course - School Tour” along with transition and ice breaker games have been designed to provide students with an opportunity to settle into their new environment before classes and learning officially begins.

At St Matthews we recognise and support the many post school pathways for our students. Our senior students are supported in programs that empower them to seek meaningful pathways beyond school enabling them to fully contribute to their world by reaching their full potential. The support and guidance given to school leavers is aimed at empowering them with the skills and knowledge to seek their pathway - into employment, apprenticeships or further tertiary study. Programs such as work experience are offered to interested Year 10 students in addition to other opportunities such as ‘Try a Trade” Expo, The Western Sydney HSC Career Expo, engaging in university visits, mine tours and visits, Medical and Health Expo - providing students opportunities to explore future pathways. School Based Apprenticeships are offered for senior students as a part of their HSC pattern of study as are EVET courses delivered either through Mudgee TAFE, TAFE NSW or other RTO’s. Such courses allow students to engage in their post school pathway, gaining Australian recognised qualifications in addition to their HSC and in some cases an ATAR. The St Matthews careers website is a platform for students and parents to access relevant and accurate pathways information that supports the work at school becoming an invaluable learning and support network tool.
